CANOE is a nonprofit corporation based in the District of Columbia that is awaiting 501(c)3 status from the IRS.
While our application for federal tax-exemption is pending, we are partnering with an incredible existing nonprofit, RE!NSTITUTE, to serve as our fiscal sponsor and accept tax-deductible donations on our behalf.

Why support CANOE?
We cultivate and advance socially-just internal systems that provide a seamless foundation upon which small nonprofit organizations can grow and strengthen their impact.
We envision a world where nonprofits’ internal operations and the people who carry out operations work receive comparable focus, attention and investment as nonprofits’ external programs. We fiercely believe that nonprofits must be strong from the inside out before they can successfully fulfill their missions.
How we do it:
1. Providing exceptional, low-cost operations support for small nonprofits, filling in the gaps for executive directors so they can focus on achieving their mission. We hire amazing, highly-qualified individuals to serve as part-time operations staff and provide flexible, affordable support in the areas of human resources, financial management, information technology, compliance, and governance. 2. Growing and sustaining an online community of practice among nonprofit operations professionals that enables networking, learning, and sharing of best practices, while elevating and rebranding the field of nonprofit operations more broadly. Learn more.
3. Serving as an experimentation hub for new approaches to nonprofit management that challenge the status quo and reinvent traditional approaches to running an organization that have perpetuated the racial leadership gap. We will model and share what we learn in the areas of democratic governance, equity and inclusion, and effective, seamless internal systems that enable organizations to grow in a healthy way and expand their impact on the world.
